This is the story of a Jasmine-scented South African summer night.

This is a story about disappointment in God, and this is a conversation about the dreams that do NOT come true.

Christie and Lisa-Jo recorded this episode the week of Christie’s twenty-second wedding anniversary. They marveled over the long years of their friendship, and all the dreams-come-true they have witnessed in each other’s lives.

But what about those dreams that don’t come true?

Can we trust a God who sometimes says NO? Is that God still good?

Lisa-Jo tells the story of her most bitter disappointment and the surprising encounter she had one warm, South African night.

Sunday morning still life.
.
I had eggs for breakfast. My hands are stained with pollen. This vignette looked so beautiful. Because I have a camera, and Instagram, I can share it with you.
.
I am grateful, content.

I’m not sure I’ve ever worked so hard to keep the tears back as I did when recording today’s new episode of Out of the Ordinary Books. You don’t have to be a mother to feel gutted by any story of a child’s pain.
.
But at the end of this story is an invitation. Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me.” AND WE CAN HELP THAT HAPPEN.

I’ve been a bit sick with allergies/asthma but summer cosmos are good medicine. I find I cut more flowers in July and August because it’s hot and sticky and the garden as a whole feels a bit overwhelming. Playing with flowers indoors helps me focus on the gifts of the garden rather than the griefs (there are always griefs).
.
There’s quite a bit about cosmos in my book. Hopefully that means a few more of you will be picking cosmos with me next summer! 🌸

I don’t typically share on my personal IG feed about each month’s new issue of Paper&String, the digital care package I help make with a whole community of artists, writers, pastors, cooks and bakers, and … well, I could keep going. It’s a wonderfully creative group. But this month’s issue?? I pretty much read the whole thing with my jaw dropped and open. The theme for this July issue is enchantment, and WOW. It worked. I am freshly filled with joy and wonder and light. ✨ Friends, If you don’t yet subscribe, this one is too good to miss.
.
There’s a link in my profile where you can learn more or subscribe. It’s only $5.99! Are you already a subscriber? If so, I’d love to hear your favorite thing from this month’s care package. Or maybe you are only getting started? This is definitely one to savor.

I’m a less-is-more kind of girl, and summer is too much in every way.
.
Too much heat. Too much humidity. Too many gorgeous garden flowers asking to be cut.
.
Too much pollen dropped on all the furniture. Too much sun on our cheeks, too many fire flies late at night. Two many watermelon drips. Too much time together.
.
And I’m trying to keep up. Trying to open my mouth wide. And wider. (Psalm 81:10)

I’ve lived a lot of life with this birthday boy. He was and is my best birthday gift. Has it only been 15 years of double celebration? And how is he 15 already?
.
Time is a gift. It gives us good boundaries. But it’s also like an ill-fitting outfit we weren’t really meant to wear. We are always living an experience that doesn’t quite fit within the minutes and the hours and the days.
