Ep. 7 – Instead of Setting Goals, Try This

Oct 31, 2018

This is the story about one thousand Easter eggs.

Really it’s the story about listening for invitations rather than setting goals. It’s the difference between taking control of your future and surrendering control.

This is an honest conversation about why the language of goal setting is a struggle for us, and why we both tend to use the word “invitation” instead.

Whether or not you’re a natural goal-setter, we hope you’ll join the conversation!

What’s it like to retreat into rest in the beautiful English countryside? Here’s a glimpse of our time in the Cotswolds. @kimberlyacoyle @suddenjourneys and I saw our dream come true: we wanted only to create the space for twelve women to encounter themselves again. To step away from our daily lives and known worlds through travel feels like a kind of emptying. But then we can be filled to overflowing by beauty, by quiet, by good food, and by deep conversation around tables. We’ll be sharing an invitation to next summer’s retreat very soon. 💐

What is the point of tea and cake and travel in a world full of trouble? Im not always sure, but conversation over a slice of Victoria Sponge and a pot of English Breakfast with my friend and fellow retreat host @kimberlyacoyle today reminded me that she and I are good at rest. Our personalities and our love of beauty and contemplation means that we live lives infused with rhythms of rest more naturally than some people do. My intense need for rest and my longing to move at a slower pace have often felt like impairments. I’m less productive. I am incapable of hustling. A busy day can almost break me. But as we prepare to welcome a dozen women into a week of real rest, I think I saw clearly for the first time how the thing I have often experienced almost as a handicap has become a strength I can share. Our world needs high-energy people who can get things done. But our world also needs me. And I hope it goes without saying, our world needs you.

When I was a little girl growing up in Texas, my favorite book was The Secret Garden. I never felt like I belonged. Never felt completely understood. But some things just take time. 💚🥰
