This week has had its highs and lows. The highs were made of fire and gold.

Beauty feeds us, beauty heals us, beauty connects us to one another and to our Maker. Noticing beauty and cultivating beauty aren’t optional. We are here to make beautiful art, build beautiful relationships, tend beautiful places, sing beautiful songs, seek beautiful truth. Yes, it’s often imperfect and incomplete. Yes, it sometimes goes up in flames. But what happens next? Given enough time and enough love, beauty rises from the ashes.

True in the garden. True in life. Losing our lives is the only way to come alive. And it is so good to be alive.
.
Also, it can be hard. @lisajobaker and I talk about some of the hardness on today’s new episode of The Out of the Ordinary podcast.
.
Some days, we pick flowers. Some days, we bury bulbs. I’m burying bulbs in every sense right now. The trees aren’t even fully bare, and I’m thinking about spring.
.
Today is for a few more bulbs in the ground.
.
What are you “planting” these days? And how?

“I prefer winter and fall, when you can feel the bone structure in the landscape---the loneliness of it---the dead feeling of winter. Something waits beneath it---the whole story dosen't show.” - Andrew Wyeth
.
Winter is on its way. I heard it this morning in the hard frost under my feet, glimpsed it in the fog of my breath. The natural world is paring itself back. Emptying itself. I love the simplicity of this season. I think the spareness is beautiful. But I could not love it if I had no hope in the fullness of summer.

Time to get to work, but I can’t stop turning my head to watch the leaves fall.
.
Maybe I should add “gaze outside” to my list of tasks. Maybe I should give “paying attention” its rightful place in my life.
.
Or maybe I’m just procrastinating. 😉 But I do know I don’t want to miss this. Winter is a long road, and this beauty is food for the journey. 🍁✨🍁
